At the center of the captivating rolling hills, lived a shepherd boy. His being was essentially pure, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was essentially to tend to his flock of sheep.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the gales among the single tree on the peak were his constant companions. Day in day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long read more for companionship. On one such day from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plot.
Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy decided to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One day he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills for rescue but saw nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a couple of more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
